Alert: nephrotic syndrome definition

Although some resources (ie Merck, NIH) define nephrosis as the presence of at least 3g of protein in a 24-hour urine collection, it seems that other resources (e-medicine, MD consult, MedLine+) define it as at least 3.5g in 24 hours.

If you are asked on the NPLEX if 3g is the minimum required to diagnose nephrosis, the answer is yes.

If you are asked if 3.5 grams is the minimum, the answer is still yes.

If you are asked to choose between 3g and 3.5g (unlikely), we recommend using the lower threshold.
